Sharper leaves without contract

After a visit on Thursday, Darren Sharper left Jacksonville without a contract. Sharper is reported as saying he had a “productive discussion” with the Jaguars and that he would remain in touch.

Sharper, 35, had a very productive season last year for the World Champion Saints and was the key in the defensive backfield for a defense which was the leagues turnover and scoring leader. Sharper himself had 9 interceptions and 3 touchdowns.

While he is recovering from knee surgery, if healthy, Sharper does still have something left in the tank and should be given consideration by the Jaguars for secondary help.

Jacksonville Jaguars draft, high risk, high reward?

The Jacksonville Jaguars play in the AFC South division which contains two prolific passers and one quarterback who is very mobile. Last year, the Jacksonville Jaguars only logged 14 sacks on opponents quarterbacks and needed to improve the pass rush if the Jags could compete.

Well, Jacksonville targeted the defensive line early and often with their 6 picks, selecting 4 defensive linemen with their first 4 selections. While the effort was admirable, the selections may leave a bit to be desired with Jags fans.

Many mock drafts had Jacksonville selecting USF DE Jason Pierre-Paul, I thought that was a mistake. He wound up going to the New York Giants. The experienced Georgia Tech DE, Derrick Morgan was available when the Jags selected at #10. Jacksonville decided to pull the trigger on Cal product, DE Tyson Alualu. While Alualu is talented, I believe that was a major reach at the #10 spot for him.

With the #74 pick, Jacksonville made a good pick with the selection of D’Anthony Smith from Louisiana Tech. He’s a 6’2″ 305 pound defensive tackle who can be quite disruptive.

Jacksonville did select again until late Saturday morning with the #143 selection in the 5th round. They selected a defensive player listed as a DE who will most likely be a speed rusher in the Jacksonville defense. 6’1″ 250 pound Larry Hart out of Central Arkansas. With the second pick in the fifth round, Jacksonville reached for another player once again, by selecting DE Austen Lane from Murray State. Though he has great physical presence at 6’6″ 260, he will be a work in progress.

With 2 6th round selections, Jacksonville selected RB Deji Karim and KR Scotty McGee respectively. Karim is out of Southern Illinois and reportedly had a very impressive workout for scouts. McGee is said to have sub 4.4 40 speed and will help the Jaguars squad in the return game if he can latch on the final roster.

From Grove’s Twitter account, but then again as Santonio Holmes informed the media, from time to time those pesky Tweets can be hacked.

Groves has been a major underachiever on a team which was the league’s worst at rushing the passer. Groves, 25, is entering his 3rd year as a pro and has a career total of 43 sacks and 2.5 sacks.

The Jaguars last year had 14 total team sacks and Groves didn’t have one of them.
